Low Tide

Deep in the Eskdale valley one can board a charming steam train which will take you west to the coast at Ravenglass. It was here at low tide that we listened to the distant echo of test fire from the nearby military base, and Lucy and I walked along the wet sands under surprisingly warm sun, clock-watching so as to avoid missing our train back to the heart of the Lakes. There is a small but inspiring Roman ruin in the town, worth the short walk if you’re in to that sort of thing…
