Big Data in Urban Morphology

In this paper Geoff Boeing examines ways in which the Smart Cities paradigm can leverage publicly sourced datasets to enhance traditional forms of urban form analysis and visualisation to further our understanding of urban morphology.

The paper outlines how a library called OSMnx can be used in a Python development environment to pull datasets from OpenStreetMap and visualise in, for example, figure-ground diagrams and rose diagrams, the essence of urban form in such a way as to allow critical analysis of a wide range of urban centres in a visually consistent context.
